14 | COVER STORY— November/December 2017
• Obtaining additional data necessary to support
the use of a variety of quantitative frameworks
for understanding and assessing built environ-
ment interventions
Focus in 2018
So what's the final thing we learned in 2017? We
learned that many people are looking to make sense
of the indoor environmental world. Well, maybe not
President Trump, but we have hope. There was a
workshop in October that we watched via webcast. In
fact, it was the symposium in Washington, D.C. based
on the above Microbiome report. Carl Grimes of Hay-
ward Homes stood up at the final session and asked
the panelists what it all means. Who can or should
connect the research and the people together?
There have been more than a few associations
over the years tasked with those questions. We've
heard Grimes ask these same questions at several
events over the years. Joe Hughes of IAQ Radio and
host of the annual Healthy Buildings Summit has been
talking about how to move research into practice. He
posted about this year's summit at http://www.iaqra-
dio.com/nate-adams-carl-grimes-what-we-learned-
and-how-it-can-help-you/#more-3483, but we'll be
talking to him next year to see what he's found in
bringing both scientists and practitioners together.
Here at Healthy Indoors, we're going to make a
few changes to help us dig deeper into stories and
find the meaning that could help our core audiences
make the right connections to solve their problems.
Next month, we're looking at the Sloan Foundation
and their subprograms Microbiology of the Built En-
vironment and Chemistry of Indoor Environments.
Are they changing the way science is done in our
industry? Check it out in 2018!
